teachHer (2022)
for soprano, mezzo-soprano, string quartet, harpsichord and live electronics
premiered by Stabant Mariae on April 12th, 2022 in Kirchlindach
The patriarchal machinations of (un)intentionally silencing various biblical female figures or distorting their mode of action, which have lasted for over a century, form the starting point of the composition. Thus, with the help of live electronics, a sonic foundation is to be created, which is gradually defragmented and superimposed. Above this, the two biblical figures Marta and Maria and the associated roles of women in (contemporary) society are thematized and combined with feminist reflections by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Maria und Marta; Als sie weiter zogen, kam er in ein Dorf, und eine Frau mit Namen Marta nahm ihn auf. Und diese hatte eine Schwester mit Namen Maria; die setzte sich dem Herrn zu Füssen und hörte seinen Worten zu. Marta aber war ganz mit der Bewirtung beschäftigt. Sie kam nun zu ihm und sagte: Herr, kümmert es dich nicht, dass meine Schwester die Bewirtung mir allein überlässt? Sag ihr doch, sie solle mir zur Hand gehen. Der Herr aber antwortete ihr: Marta, du sorgst und mühst dich um vieles; doch eines ist nötig. Maria hat das gute Teil erwählt; das soll ihr nicht genommen werden.
Martin Luther sagte dazu: Marta, dein Werk muss bestraft und für nichts geachtet werden. Ich will kein Werk haben, als das Werk Marias, das ist der Glaube, dass du glaubst an das Wort.
Meister Eckhart sagte dazu: Maria war so voll Begier; sie begehrte un wusste nicht, wie; sie wollte und wusste nicht, was; wir haben sie in Verdacht, die liebe Maria, sie sitze etwas mehr aus Lust dort als zu geistiger Förderung.

Be a full person. Motherhood is a glorious gift, but do not define yourself solely by motherhood.
Teach her that the idea of gender roles is absolute nonsense. Do not ever tell her that she should or should not do something because she is a girl.
Never speak of marriage as an achievement.
Teach her to reject likeability. Her job is not to make herself likeable, her job is to be her full self, a self that is honest and aware of the equal humanity of other people.
Teach her to question our culture’s selective use of biology as a reason for social norms.
Beware the danger of what I call feminism light. Being a feminist is like being pregnant. You either are or you are not.
In teaching about oppression be careful to not turn the opressed into saints.
