Kohle klingle! (2024)

audio installation

opened on June 15th, 2024 in Bramboden
collaboration with Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and UNESCO Biosphäre Entlebuch

Since 2011, charcoal burning in Entlebuch has been part of Switzerland’s intangible cultural heritage. For generations, charcoal burners here have not only produced high-quality grill charcoal but have also maintained and passed on the knowledge and tradition of charcoal burning—a tradition that is at risk: Today, there are only five active charcoal burners in Entlebuch. A newly created charcoal-burning room in the Entlebucher hamlet of Bramboden (LU) invites visitors to experience the ancient craft. A 270-degree panorama displays atmospheric images of charcoal production. Close-ups of various materials and stages of the charcoal-burning process are complemented by sounds. For the implementation of the room, music researchers from the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU), charcoal burner Doris Wicki, and composer Manuela Villiger collaborated. Thus, the quadrophonic sound installation titled „Kohle klinge!“ exclusively uses sound recordings of charcoal. Some of these sounds are heard in their raw, unprocessed form, while others are refined through the use of multiple filters, reverb, and spatial effects.
